Zaporizhzhia Oblast is a region in southern Ukraine, known for its industrial centres, historical landmarks, and access to the Sea of Azov.

 

Total Area: 27,183 km²

 

Administrative Structure: The region is divided into 5 districts, 14 cities, 20 urban-type settlements, and 921 villages. The administrative center is the city of Zaporizhzhia.

 

Demographics: As of January 1, 2022, the population of Zaporizhzhia Oblast was approximately 1.6 million people. Due to Russian aggression, the population has significantly decreased.

 

Interesting Facts: Zaporizhzhia is a city with a rich history, where numerous historical sites, such as the Khortytsia Island, are located. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, is located in the region. Zaporizhzhia Oblast is known for its resorts on the coast of the Sea of Azov, such as Berdyansk and Kyrylivka.

 

Russian-Ukrainian War: From the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Zaporizhzhia Oblast became one of the key arenas of hostilities.The cities of Melitopol, Berdyansk, and other settlements in the region were temporarily occupied by Russian troops. Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was occupied by russian forces, creating a threat of a nuclear disaster. As a result of the war, the region suffered enormous destruction and losses.
