Sumy Oblast is a region in northeastern Ukraine, known for its nature, forests, and rivers, as well as historical landmarks such as Putyvl and Hlukhiv. Its cultural heritage includes Cossack traditions, folk art, and literary traditions.

 

Total Area: 23,834 km²

 

Administrative Structure: The region is divided into 5 districts, 15 cities, 20 urban-type settlements, and 1,433 villages. The administrative center is the city of Sumy.

 

Demographics: As of January 1, 2022, the population of Sumy Oblast was approximately 1.03 million people. Due to Russian aggression, the population has significantly decreased.

 

Interesting Facts: Sumy region is a land with a rich history, where numerous historical sites, such as Putyvl and Hlukhiv are located. Unique nature reserves and national parks, such as the Desnyansko-Starohutskyi National Nature Park, are located in the region. Sumy Oblast is known for its forests and rivers, which makes it attractive for tourism.

Russian-Ukrainian War: From the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Sumy Oblast became one of the first to take the hit of Russian troops. The cities of Sumy, Okhtyrka, and other settlements in the region suffered significant destruction as a result of the Russian occupation and constant shelling. The region is in close proximity to the border with Russia, and therefor constantly under shelling. As a result of the war, the region suffered enormous destruction and losses.
